This is the third in a series of articles from the Deep River and District Community Foundation (DRDCF) with each article focusing on the story behind one of our 28 funds.
Protecting our Heritage: The Four Seasons Conservancy Fund (Fund #102)
The multi-use trails of the Four Seasons Forest Sanctuary, located on the Town of Deep River’s Eastern edge, are the inspiration of the Four Seasons Conservancy (FSC) whose purpose is to protect the FSC forest’s unspoiled character while fostering a trail system for public enjoyment.
Since its creation in 1998, dedicated volunteers come together to work on maintenance and improvement activities by constructing bridges and boardwalks to reach benches and shelters at notable viewing locations along the trails. Protection of the FSC forest’s unspoiled character means that FSC also coordinates activities that encourage environmental and sustainability practices through scientific, educational and awareness events like the Bioblitz, Kennedy Creek hydrology study, moth, butterfly and dragonfly surveys, annual student field days and family nature walks.
As a registered charitable land trust, the FSC’s purpose and activities complement the Deep River and District Community Foundation’s vision of encouraging an active, creative and inclusive community. In this spirit, in 2006, after a visionary donor pledged matching funds to those donated by others within the Deep River and area community, the Forest Sanctuary’s ongoing stewardship was assured with the creation of the FSC Fund with the DRDCF. Through continued donations and investment earnings over the years, as of December 2024, the Fund has grown to $89,352.
By being a designated fund, investment earnings are used to support the FSC’s ongoing activities for trail improvement, signage, accessibility and outreach. Notable project achievements made possible through the Fund are the Observation Shelter (photo), lookout platforms, trail signs and the new Bishop’s Bridge.
The FSC maintains about 25 km of hiking/snowshoe trails interspersed amongst a similar length of ski trails of the Deep River Cross Country Ski Club. These trails are accessible to people of all ages for recreation, training and education all year round. They provide opportunities for charitable events, like Run for Home in support of Deep River and District Health, and other worthwhile local causes. Many of us in the community also visit the Serdula Shelter for its access to the Ottawa River, offering canoeists and kayakers the opportunity to enjoy river views that remind us of our shared history and lived experience.
